Volunteer Life in Pictures #10: It is always amazing to watch things grow. Your pet, your child, friends and maybe sometimes you notice yourself grow. In this case it's a tree. But not just any tree it is the Koky tree, which is a big part of our story. We can't wait to keep on planting and watching things grow. It's how we roll.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #9: You might be wondering what the hell we are doing. It's karaoke. Yes, even in far away places, where there is no electricity or running water in very remote areas, there is karaoke. We have forgotten what these volunteers were singing, but the locals said they liked it.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #8: There's lots of things to do when building a school. One of them is moving rocks around a building site. We use old cement sacks stapled to sticks. Place different sized rocks on this 'stretcher' and with a partner you like, you carry it somewhere else. Mitch and Cha demonstrate how to bend your knees when picking this heavy load up and thus adhering to our strict OHS policy. Oh and there is Pete and Valerie doing nothing. Again.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #7: The school did not have a single working toilet on it's grounds. The students and teachers were forced to climb through the fence into areas marked unsafe because of landmines or UXO (Unexploded Ordinances) to relieve themselves. The volunteers spent hours and days fixing these toilets, scraping old paint off and repainting and cleaning. Usually, in searing sun and very trying conditions. We have just been told that the plumbing is done and the doors are being installed. Thank you volunteers for working so hard and wearing bright coloured t-shirts while you work! You are amazing. To us anyway.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #6: Volunteers also engage in a fair bit of tree planting. In this case it's mango trees. Mango trees cost only 75cents!!! Yes, 75cents. In 2-3years the tree will start fruiting providing nutritious mangoes for the students. Claire and Sophie have named this particular mango tree, Clophie. That is such a beautiful and creative name.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #5: Volunteers makes friends with builders, because they train us in school building activities. Volunteers also get to relax and make faces to entertain themselves. Mitch, Claire and Diana show us their pretty faces. That's Mr Pai on the left. He is a builder.

Volunteer Life in Pictures #4: Part of why volunteers live in the village is to help with the building of the school. This sometimes involves hoe-ing dirt from one place to another. The volunteers unwittingly slow down the whole building process (because they don't know how to hoe). Here, Jono is shifting dirt around and thus slowing down the process.

In the village, volunteers cook for each other. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. We all go vegetarian. We all must start fires with wood (gathered from around temple & school grounds). We having many cooking disasters, which are quite funny. Here, Rosie is cooking us some amazing curry!

Volunteer Life in Pictures #2: Whilst living in the village you get access to the heart and soul of a community in rural Cambodia, but only if you are open to it. Here, Paolo captures a spectacular sunset as we rode home from the school.
